Competitive video game leagues are coming to Aiken for all ages

August 24 – The town of Aiken will soon be dipping its toes into the waters of the esport.

The city’s parks, recreation and tourism department has partnered with GGLeagues, a platform that allows players to compete in leagues of various games, in order to bring video game leagues to the world. community of Aiken.

Four games will be offered to participants: “Madden NFL 21”, “Fortnite”, “Rocket League” and “Super Smash Bros”. Players will sign up for season passes, which cost $ 30, to compete and will be able to access the leagues for each game from the comfort of their own homes.

The competitions, or seasons, for each game will last six weeks: a five-week regular season, then a playoff week. Prizes for the top teams include in-game currency for the various games, as well as a GGLeagues champion’s jersey and medal.

Participants must have a console or PC, the game and have an Internet connection to participate.

Bret Howell, sports supervisor for the town of Aiken PRT, said it was a good opportunity for the town to get involved.

“It’s a natural progression of things getting more and more online, so we want to be able to offer something in this community for Aiken as a whole,” Howell said. “That way we can involve more kids who may not be (looking for) athletic sports.”

There are three different divisions that can be entered: youth, which is aimed at 8-12 year olds; adolescent, aimed at 13-18 year olds; and adult, which includes anyone over the age of 18.

For those wishing to register and who have never participated in activities through the Town of Aiken PRT, they must register at Citizens Park, located at 651 Old Airport Road, at the baseball fields Complex 2 6-10. A birth certificate and proof of residence are required to register. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Registration closes September 22 and leagues will begin the week of October 4.
