Contra Returns mobile game announced

It’s a mobile game, but Contra Returns takes the franchise back to its roots as a festival of side-scrolling alien explosions.

Against returns

Contra Returns is bringing the classic shooter franchise back to a new mobile audience starting next month.

From the same Tencent affiliate that brought you Call of Duty: Mobile and Honor of Kings comes Contra Returns, a brand new Contra game that takes the series back to its roots. And also brings it to a whole new platform.

Yes, Contra Returns is a mobile game, but to be fair, it’s also a side-scrolling shooter, which means it should work just fine with touch controls. The game releases July 26 for Android and iOS.

The Konami trailer released today features exactly five seconds of actual gameplay where we see the same kind of side-scrolling action we’ve come to expect from classic Contra titles. The rest of the trailer is just two muscular dudes replacing Bill Rizer and Lance Bean as they prep their weapons, smoke cigars, and push giant tires. For some reason.

Although Lance and Bill return as the main characters, the penultimate splash screen shows a total of six characters. One of them could be Sheena Etranzi from Contra: Hard Corps, one could be Lucia from Contra 4 and Contra: Shattered Soldier, one could be Brad Fang from Contra: Hard Corps, and the last one could be Jaguar from Neo. Contra.

The controls appear to be standard thumb controls (which you can probably reposition however you like). Konami promises more than 200 levels, new game modes like One Life mode and 1v1 and 3v3 multiplayer modes.

Pre-registration is available now so you can download Contra Returns when it releases on July 26.

You know what? It doesn’t look terrible. And as far as Contra: Rogue Corps was back in 2019, a return to Contra’s roots seems like a good direction for the franchise. It was either that or continue down the table route, and it never seemed to fit Contra well.

In other Konami news, we may also get a Castlevania collection on PC soon, if recent regulatory approvals are any indication.
