Hideo Kojima Casts Elle Fanning For His Next Major Video Game

Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima’s next project remains typically mysterious, but it now has a star: Elle Fanning.

Not much is known about Kojima Productions’ upcoming video game and Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima, but the game’s author has officially revealed a cast member for his next title: Elle Fanning.

Kojima recently took to Twitter to let fans know about one of the cryptic teasers for the upcoming game. The initial teaser poster, revealed at Tokyo Game Show, featured the silhouette of a young woman with the text “WHO AM I ?” The updated version answers this mysterious question by revealing the face behind the figure. The actor presented on the poster is none other than Elle Fanning. Kojima’s tweet doesn’t solve all the mysteries, as it seems to tease two other as yet unrevealed stars.

Fanning, a former child actor whose career flourished well into adulthood, joins a long line of Hollywood stars featured in Hideo Kojima games. Kojima’s last directorial credit was on Death Strandingwhich featured The Walking Deadby Norman Reedus as protagonist Sam Porter Bridges. Death Stranding also features performances by Mads Mikkelsen, Margaret Qualley and Léa Seydoux. A prominent character was modeled after filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, although he was voiced by Jesse Corti. Before Death Strandingdirected by Kojima Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Painwhich featured 24by Kiefer Sutherland.

Death Stranding marks Elle Fanning’s first foray into the world of video games, but she’s been acting in movies and on TV for over twenty years (a particularly impressive feat considering she’s only 24). More recently, she’s been seen leading two different Hulu series, starring Catherine the Great in Great and Michelle Carter on Plainville’s daughter. Fanning is also an executive producer on both projects.

It is unclear in which Hideo Kojima project Elle Fanning will appear. Some fans have speculated that Kojima is teasing a sequel to Death Stranding (original Death Stranding Star Norman Reedus recently confirmed that a sequel was in development, and a report suggests it was, at one point, in development for the older Google Stadia). The director also recently revealed that he is working on a project with Xbox. Whether or not this is the sequel to Death Stranding remains uncertain – while the original game was a PlayStation exclusive, it eventually made its way to PC, and given that the sequel would have been intended for Stadia, it’s clear that Kojima Productions is willing to migrate platforms with the franchise.

Fans can expect more news on whatever Hideo Kojima’s next game is in the near future.
