Netflix wants to create a “Squid Game” video game

Netflix’s most popular new show in its history is Squid Game, a series where contestants play children’s games until only one remains alive.

Netflix has already announced plans to jump into the video game industry and release games within its app based on its original series.

You can see where it’s going.

In a rather fantastic new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s vice president of content for Asia-Pacific, confirmed that yes, Netflix’s new interest in games has turned into an interest in transforming. Squid Game into a video game:

“We’ve received an overwhelming but happy volume of requests from the organization – from the consumer products department, the gaming group, our other international teams. The role of my team is to really look at all of these opportunities together, to create this roadmap for the Squid Game IP. We’re looking at several different areas – games, consumer products, and more – to really understand what we can do for our audiences to increase their affinity for our content and give them more joy, while remaining loyal to the world than our creator. built.”

When Squid Game originally debuted, I watched it maybe the second day it was released, before it was a “thing” and compared it to an adult version of Fall Guys, the recently popular video game where colorful characters play different games that eliminate them until only one is left standing. It’s a throwback to a long-standing craze for the game, the ‘battle royale’ genre that was originally inspired by the classic Japanese film, Battle Royale, where schoolchildren are forced to fight to the death on a Isle. It is something that was too inspiration for Squid Game itself, so we’ve come full circle.

While it’s easy to imagine how Squid Game could perform like a real video game, we don’t really need to imagine. Games that allow for custom matches like Roblox and Fortnite have dozens of fan-made attempts to remake Squid Game in those worlds. The Netflix version of a Squid Game video game would obviously be licensed, and yet Netflix’s gaming ambitions are so new that it’s hard to say when it would actually be a released product and what form it would take.

Netflix’s initial foray into gaming here has serious implications that it would be more about the reach and quality of mobile games, rather than PC or console type games, so they can be played in. the Netflix mobile app. This fits in with past games we’ve seen from them before like Stranger Things, a throwback classic.

So no, when Netflix makes a Squid Game video game, I wouldn’t expect to see HoYeon Jung do a performance capture for an AAA hit release or whatever. Think small, think mobile. This is kind of a perfect blend of Netflix’s new ambitions for the game and one of its most successful IPs, and would be an ultimate test of the concept of the service moving into this space. But for now, that’s still a goal, not a near-release title, and maybe we’ll talk more about it when Squid Game season 2 releases, for now it seems like a long, long way away if we’re still in it. the first planning steps for something like this. Hopefully they can do it justice and do something half as good as what Roblox and Fortnite have already produced in a matter of weeks.
