Storyteller’s demo is a joy

I thought Storyteller sounded promising when I first heard about the puzzle game in 2012, after winning the Nuovo award at the IGFs. Now that it’s finally almost done, I’m excited to play a demo in Steam Next Fest and report that yes, it’s smart and quite delicious. Each puzzle presents you with a cast of characters, a few verbs and nouns, and an outcome you must achieve by organizing everything into comic book panels. Simple, smart, satisfying, and surprisingly funny.

The way everything behaves in the panels is contextual, building on their innate character, the relationships established in the previous panels and what has already happened. You know where the story of each puzzle goes, but you have to figure out how to get there, starting with a series of empty comic book panels. You got to, you know, tell a story. It’s fun to play around with the different elements, figure out the possible interactions, and then figure out how it all comes together.

Here is a first simple example: Baron Murders Edgar. Your cast is blue haired dandy Edgar, beautiful maiden Eleonora, and the dastardly Baron, and your panel backgrounds are Propose and Grave. The first step is to understand why the Baron might want to assassinate Edgar. Well, drag Suggest to an empty panel, then insert Edgar and Eleonora and these two will be in love. Set the next panel to Suggest Again, this time with Eleonora and the Baron, and the beefy boy will be heartbroken that she’s already in love. So end the story with a Grave sign, placing Edgar in the ground and Baron standing in front of him, and the logic of the story will give him a bloody knife and a fierce scowl. You managed to get a murder committed. It gets more complicated with longer sequences, more complex stories to build, and more verbs and nouns. Complete all the puzzles and you will also unlock more complex versions of many.


I mistakenly put the already cremated character in the second judgment panel, so God just looked at their ashes. Very good.

The storyteller had always seemed smart, but I didn’t expect it to be funny. The little animations for actions and reactions are lovely, especially when your answer isn’t right and something is wrong. Along the way, you’ll accidentally create more vampires, kill the wrong person, destroy marriages, and did I mention you’d kill a lot of people? The stories to be solved in the demo are largely romances, fairy tales, and tragedies, so there is a lot of upheaval.

You can download the Storyteller demo steam as part of the Steam Next Fest demo-o-rama. Another demo was briefly available earlier this year, but this one is being updated. new songs including the ability to move entire panels, more animations, and support for macOS.

Creator Daniel Benmergui put Storyteller on hold in 2014, explaining that after three years of work, he “started to feel creatively numb from always dealing with the same project.” He switched to a dungeon-crawling RPG named Ernesto, which later spawned Fidel Dungeon Rescue in 2017, a cute and fun roguelike-like puzzle game on the layout of a good dog route through dungeons. dangerous. Now storyteller again. Hooray!
